Aberdeenshire

Visitors to Aberdeenshire will no doubt we aware of Scotland 's history as a nation. Human beings have lived in Scotland since around 14,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, but the recorded history of Scotland only begins as recently as around the time of the first Roman invasion in the first century AD. Although the Romans did not manage to conquer north of the lowlands and in to modern day Aberdeenshire itself, this was largely due to the land not being worth the required expenditure on troops and resources. Undoubtedly any nation at that time period would have fallen under the boots of the better trained and better equipped Roman army appropriately motivated.

Scotland 's greatest influence on the politics of nations outside of their own borders was probably during the reign of Henry VIII, when he was keen for his son to marry Mary. However the Scots sent her away to France at the age of five to keep her safe. This French intervention ultimately resulted in strong anti-French feeling among the protestant communities in Scotland and lead to the Scottish reformation, which would have had as big an effect on the people of Aberdeenshire as anywhere.

The good news for visitors to the country is that Scottish people are intensely proud of their heritage and any visit to Aberdeenshire will result in a head full of new facts and dates for anyone interested in their European history.
